Breaking Free from Self-Doubt and Limiting Beliefs
First, I need you to know that you’re not alone in your self-doubt, nor your limiting beliefs. There is nothing wrong with you. Rest assured in knowing that any thoughts you’ve had aren’t ones that haven’t crossed another person’s mind. These issues aren’t unique to you, and a lot of the time they don’t even come from you, but are a result of inhabited thoughts and conceptions from society.
I used to think that I wasn’t smart enough or brave enough to pursue my dreams and aspirations. I felt inferior, I felt not good enough.
I felt it when my peers in college did better than me, then I felt it again when my colleagues surpassed me.
Thoughts would resurface in my mind of what I truly wanted for myself, a path less frequently traveled, but my self-doubt always crept in and yanked any motivation out from under me. These thoughts only got worst when I voiced wanting to pursue entrepreneurship to others. I wanted to share my excitement with others, almost in search of validation to pursue it. .
Unfortunately, I was only met with more doubt that then compounded on my own pre-existing self-doubt. I was told that it’s too difficult, that it’s going to take a lot of work, and that many people want that life for themselves but it’s very few that actually achieve it.
For a while, I internalized it.
So much to the point were that pre-conception consumed me and I neglected my aspirations for many years to come. And then I started to do inner-work and I thankfully realized, those things that people were telling me were all just projections of their own. From people who also didn’t step out to pursue their dreams. Of course, the only thing they could feed me was doubt – that’s all they’ve ever experienced themselves! That’s the only thing they could attest to.
And then I decided…
I wanted to see what would happen if I really tried at something.
Barring any self-doubt and any outside noise – I wanted to see what kind of results I would receive if I were to put my all into something, invest in myself, and live in my creativity and passions. So that’s what I did. I would be feeding you a lie if I said it was simple, because it wasn’t. But it was worth it! And I’ve truly and honestly never felt better. Daily, I find myself happier because I took a risk on myself, and on top of that I feel fulfilled because I’m allowing myself to pour into my sense of creativity. I even feel a deeper sense of trust with myself because I proved those internalized thoughts wrong, after carrying them for so long.
Feeling good, being fulfilled, entertaining creativity, building self trust – I truly feel like this is what life is about!
For the longest time, I took on these uncomfortable thoughts all on my own. But I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to wield the burden of carrying them by yourself. And you do not need the validation of others in order to get started.
And the truth is, you’ve always been enough.
Have you ever considered that?
However you are in this moment, you are enough. We need to remember this. That you are enough – not because of what you do, achieve, or become, but simply because you exist. Your worth isn’t tied to productivity, appearance, or perfection. It’s rooted in your being. Even in the moments when you feel messy, uncertain, or in progress, you are whole.
Healing isn’t about becoming someone new – it’s about remembering who you’ve always been. You don’t need to earn rest, love, or peace. You are deserving of those things now, just as you are.
Let’s dissect self-doubt more:
Self-doubt often masquerades as logic, convincing you that you’re not ready, capable, or worthy of success. But these thoughts aren’t facts – they’re conditioned beliefs that can be unlearned.
The good news: it’s likely easier than you think.
I used to think that I wasn’t ready to take the next step in my entrepreneurship aspirations. The day I realized that thought process was just self-doubt disguised as caution – everything changed.
Understanding Where Self-Doubt Comes From
Limiting beliefs stem from:
Past experiences that reinforced negative narratives.
Fear of failure or judgment.
Unconscious comparisons with others.
2. Shifting Your Mindset
It’s time to start questioning and challenging these beliefs. I encourage you to think and analyze:
Is this thought propelling me forward or holding me back?
If it is propelling you forward, good! We want to stay in that sweet spot and continue with finding similar thoughts that make you feel great.
If it’s holding you back, it’s not serving you, and you need to get rid of that thought pattern and understand the root cause of why that thought is crossing your mind in the first place.
What evidence do I have that contradicts this belief?
Returning to the thought that I was not smart enough – I had to remind myself that being smart doesn’t mean you have to be the most intelligent person in the room. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses, and my academic history has shown that when I apply myself, I am capable of getting good marks in school. I used this evidence to prove this belief wrong, highlighting that I am always capable of finding solutions and answers with the resources I have at hand and that when I apply myself to my full extent I am able to create wonderful results.
3. Replacing Limiting Beliefs
After identifying these limiting beliefs, it’s time to get intentional.
Replace them with affirmations and empowering thoughts.
Create a habit of repeating positive affirmations that reflect your new narrative. Writing these down and saying them out loud reinforces the shift from self-doubt to self-confidence.
In my medicine cabinet, I’ve stuck post-it notes with my favorite affirmations that I read every morning and every night when I’m washing up. It’s a great part of my routine that I look forward to and am grateful for because there have been moments that have really lifted me out of any sour moods I was feeling prior. And now it’s like muscle memory at this point!
